After dealing with a pad for about 2 trips i did anything and everything I could to get an underquilt first. Will make your world a million times better
I went with a 0* UQ for my first one. My first trip was in the low 30's and I didn't have a sleeping bag. I had my UQ and a down jacket and slept rathe comfortable that night.
You can always loosen up an underquilt to work in a various amount of weather conditions.
Bridge freezes before road... So does your back side in a hammock... definitely get the under quilt first...
