If you're just making a double layer with down inside. Don't you just need to allow to the fluff you want? For example 1.5" loft you would add 3 inches to length and width to allow for a 1.5" dart on each side.

That would allow the down to not compress when you lay in the hammock.

Sounds right in theory. Just wondering if anyone has tried this and what did they learn?

Darts engineered to keep down in place? Darts would be asym and sized according to how much insulation is needed at that spot.

    1. Ripstop on top and dwr on bottom?

    2. What are the chances the down will comply with the darts?

    3. Should a third layer be added under hammock layer with no darts made of dwr?

    4. Anybody know the math for sizing the darts?

Thanks guys. Been reading this forum for a long time. First post.
    Welcome to the forums!

You are undertaking a great project. I'm happy to help if I can.

    1) I use a two layer hammock. Both are ripstop. The inner layer (that you lay on is uncoated), the outer is calendared and downproof.
    2)Down complies very well.
3)The layer of fabric that I use next to the hammock is not darted, but the baffles that are attached to it are.
4)Ratios are important. I can't give out all of the math, but I can hint that most of it relates to how you make a quilt deferentially cut. I do this in three directions. Most use two.

I hope this helps. If you have more specific questions, let me know and I'm happy to help you with your DIY.

What would happen if I put the down directly between my parachute hammock and DWR under-layer? I love how many made up words are on this forum.

The numbers are all dimensions of dart in inches.

That's very similar to what I'm thinking except my bottom layer would be the same size as the top so that the whole hammock is insulated at least a little. More down where you need it. Less where you don't. That's the plan anyway.

I took the easy way out and made a climashield insulated UQP. Easy to take on and off and may use it as an under quilt in the spring.

Also made a top cover in a similar design.
