Also - the darts - What's the final opinion here?
I've made a few CS underquilts now, all just rectangle, and it sort of seems that darts would be beneficial.
I mean, I've managed to solve any issues with secondary suspension, etc., but they all look like there's one or two spots that simply have 'extra' material.
Sewing the shock cord channels to the outer shell first would make it much easier to align the other layers. Doing everything at once is challenging to keep everything aligned. By doing the channels to the shell first you can also leave the inner she'll material and insulation a bit longer and wider, then sew on the outer shell stitch line as a guide. Again, it's just much simpler that way. Lesson learned...
As far as the darts are concerned, I think I just put too many in. Even though the width of the dart bases adds up to the same loft measured for the insulation, I had loose material hanging down once all was said and done. Maybe putting darts on both sides and ends accounted for the material hang--I'm not really sure. Bottom line though, I'd definitely lessen the amount used, if using any at all, the next time.

I'm getting ready to make one of these for my best friend who is a vegan so using down isn't an option. Printed the PDF out and going to follow your directions. Thank you!

Good luck! Post pictures when you're finished.

Thanks for the Plans. I do have a question in regards to the plans? I didn't see the demisions of the inner shell? Is it mirrored after the outer shell? and are there darts in the inner shell?

I suggest two rows of perimeter stitching.

You would cut the inner shell (liner) to the same dimensions as the outer shell AFTER darting, in the case of these plans that would be 47" x 80", whereas the original dimensions of the outer shell were 48.5" x 81.5". That way they will line up around the perimeter when you get ready to pin & sew. The insulation would technically also be 47" x 80", but I would cut it a little larger and trim after sewing. I just found it easier to handle that way.

No darts for the inner shell. Simplest way to explain it is that after darting the outer shell, layer everything up in accordance with the plans and start sewing. Recommend reading post #11 above about sewing the shock cord channels to the outer shell before layering everything up.

These are great plans. Thanks for the PDF! I will be gathering the materials and working on this in the next few weeks. Would be an easier project without the darts. Are you still thinking it would work just fine and be just as effective without the darts?

    Thanks,
