Got to try out my new double layer underquilt, got down to 36 and was toasty warm. The outter red shell is seam ripped with horizontal tubes with a full quilt wirth of down, and the blue inside layer is vertical tubes with about 3/4 of the blankets down. Both layers are approximately 60"x45". Come out pretty awesome for my first sewing project.

Here is mine. Took about 90 minutes. I couldn't figure out how to seal the edges, without the entire quilt going up, so I used bias tape.

Or go to Costco.com and just search for "down throw"

Comes right up as the first item.

I have experimented on several Costco down throws, making some into UQs and some into TQs. Here's my "latest and greatest" UQ, the one I use the most these days. It's navy blue, 66"x48", and weighs 15oz after I added some cannibalized down I had from an old sleeping bag.

As many do, I seam-ripped all the length-wise seams. That took me down to 38 degrees (by accident, it wasn't supposed to get that cold, but I slept fine, if chilly). I then went back and ripped every other 5" out of the width-wise seams (5" being the old square box size originally sewn into the quilt from Costco, so easy for me to go by as a guide), staggered every other row. Some might call it a modified KARO design now.

By doing that, I have removed 75% of the sewn-through seams (a la cold spots) and suspect I could get down to freezing now, NOT that I would plan on it. BTW, I use an UQ-protector, which helps the temperature rating.

I put temporary blue painters tape on the quilt for the photo. Otherwise it's too hard to tell where the remaining sewn-through stitching remains. Everywhere you see blue tape. Otherwise, even if it still looks as if the seam is sewn through, it's not.

Nice job. I thought about doing something similar, but was worried about the loose ends of the remaining threads eventually working completely out of the fabric. Maybe there is an easy way to secure them?

    I triple-knot tie them off.

I start by using seam-ripper to cut the thread in the middle of the 5" section I intend to rip. Then "rip" the seam for 2.5" in each direction. That is, I pull each stitch out so I have 2.5" of loose thread on each end. Then I push a needle half-way through, thread it with one of the 2.5" loose ends, which I then pull through. At that point, I cut in half the 5" of loose thread on the back side, and I put the knot(s) there, clipping off the excess thread after knotting. Repeat. So far, none have come loose that I'm aware of.

Tedious, but not bad in excellent light while watching a favorite TV show, with a big dash of patience.
