Is there much experience about efficacy of these quilts with or without seam ripping?

Seems to me that the difference would be minor for a single Costco quilt but that is just kinda "off the top of my head" guess.

I have not performed a scientifically sound experiment of the quantifiable difference of the two methods, but I'm of the opinion that the effort to rip all the seams would outweigh the benefit. But I'm new to this realm so take that opinion for what it's worth. My non seam-ripped, Costco UQ + booster (another quilt folded in half and snapped into the first one) has not let me down yet. I've had it to 47 degrees so far because that is the coldest it has gotten in Cypress to this point. We just had our first real cold front that should bring us to 32 degrees tonight. Plan to string up on the patio tonight...all in the name of R&D.

Don't get me wrong...the versions I've seen that have been seam ripped and modified look awesome and look to be very sound and have gotten good reviews from most of their owners. I'm just not there from a cost/benefit standpoint yet.

Thermal efficiency is all about loft. The average distance between the inside layer and the outside layer gives you the loft. With the sewn thru squares, there are a lot more areas of zero loft, which brings the average right down.
Also, the bigger open area gives the down more room to loft, see here,

Lastly, the sewn thru seams are put in over the down, so a lot is trapped and unable to fluff up.

I see...I think in my mind I kinda felt like once you do any sew through design, to some large degree, you have introduced a "rate limiting step" into the "equation"...but I think that thought was incomplete.

But after a bit more reading, it seems "average loft" across the area of the quilt still matters and after googling it seems many seemed to squeeze out 5-10 more degrees lower than pre-seam ripping...

For me, once it is below 50-55, I am leaping to my 20 degree gear...lol...I know, I am a cold sleeper...but having thought about it more, I can see how many getting that extra bit out of it would make a difference. In a sense, I like the reduced efficiency as a "summer quilt" though...

These are awesome. I need a light weight summer quilt. I'll have to try my Costco and see if they have any.

70 probably is about right. Without an UQ you can likely go a bit higher. I've used a 20* quilt in the summer sans UQ and been perfectly comfortable, though.

For the last couple of months I've switched to only using my CTQ while in bed. I just lay on top of the blankets (my wife has at least 5 on the bed) and use only the TQ. It's light weight and I don't move around at all so it's really quite perfect.

    Any other converts?

I would rather be in the woods... my dog would rather be in the pool. My wife thinks we are both nuts.

Show off your DIY Costco Quilts

I tried to use mine for lounging on the couch and over heated - my house stays 71 degrees...

In bed in my tighty whities alone it may be just right - I move around quit a bit though so doubtful convert

Also - weighed my son's TQ I made him - dimensions were I think 35x55inches

    8.3 oz in stuff sack
