    AZ Desert hang?

Any good hammock spotswithin a few hours drive from the valley? I'm thinking somewhere still low enough for saguaros but with enough trees to support a decent hang. Reavis Ranch area maybe? What do you guys think ?

I just want to get out of the cold weather.

Are you looking for car type camping or backpacking? For car camping there are a few places by Bartlett and Horseshoe lake. I know a few of the guys talk about the superstitions but I cant imagine many (if any) places to hang there. It's funny you are looking to get out of the cold weather while all of us in the valley are trying to get up into the cold this weekend for our hang!

    Desert Camping Spots

I have a few favorite places for quail hunting that would meet your criteria. One spot in particular is about 14 miles south of Rye on Route 87. It is not quite into the Saguaros which are still a few miles south. But, the location I have in mind is low enough in elevation to get you out of the heavy cold of Flagstaff. There are no established trails and it is all bush whacking in rough country. But, the experience is well worth it.

If you are still planning to attend the Arizona Hang at Canyon Creek this weekend, I can give you better directions in person.

For something really different than Flagstaff, you might also look into the possibility of hiking/hanging around the various lakes above Phoenix. Saguaro Lake as an example has some rough back trails that will keep you in the Saguaros and down into the 2,000' elevation range.

    I hope this helps.

    LOngbow,

I think I know the exact area you are talking about down by Rye.

I like the idea of hiking the lakes. I wish there was more decent tails that followed the lakes. I always though canoe camping around the lake would be the best way to explore them.

Mainly I'd be looking for backing packing and hammock friendly areas.

Reavis Ranch would be fine. I've hung there many times, lots of tree options. It's a very pretty ~10 mile hike in from the north. There are many other spots in the Superstitions where it is possible to hang. There are almost always trees located near the water sources out there. Us Sonoran Desert AZ hangers have to get a little inventive at times, but we git 'er done!

Thanks for the best laugh this morning; the concept of canoe camping in Arizona; my mind just boggled..

(NB- have visited AZ briefly- not long enough to explore all the interesting bits )

Arizona has more boats registered than Florida.

I would also really like to do this. The problem I find is lack of trees at the lakes I go to. I suppose I just need to go to different lakes. I would be very interested in exploring some of the calmer parts of the Colorado river by canoe/kayak and hammock camping along the way.

The Verde river has a lot of cal stretches as well that could be very good for canoe camping.

It's funny you mention the Colorado. For thanksgiving my wife and I are panning on taking or RV and following the Colorado from Kingman to Yuma. We've never really explored that area of the state and think it would be an interesting few days.
