Thanks for the input animalcontrol. I think I have enough material to have a single and a double layer. After making them I can test them out and see which one will work for me. I would certainly consider myself a cold sleeper.
Do you think I could get by with a layer of 5 oz and 2.5 oz for lower 20s?
How big is your pack?
For ground sleeping ...
1 layer of 2.5 is good to 45 degrees
2 layers of 2.5 or one layer of 5.0 is generally good to 25 degrees
1 layer of 2.5 and 1 layer of 5.0 should be good to 5- 10 degrees ...
I'm not sure how that translates into hanging, but I've heard that you knock off another 10 degrees???
I think half of a emergency space blanket should go a long way to improve it.
The formula I derived was min comfort temp = 32 - (1.8 x clo value) for the way I sleep on the ground. It will take me a year or two to come up with a formula for hanging .... one of these days I'm going to have to equate all that to R values ... so much to do, so little time.

Depends on how you sleep...I use 2.5 oz/yd alone to about 50* so I would say it should give a 10-15*F boost.
When I was trying to carry that 5.0 oz quilt? about 3600 cu in I think.
The 2 lighter weights (2.5 & 3.7) both compare very well to down but, the 5.0 and up doesn't. I could save alot of space switching to a 30* down mummy bag instead of the 5.0 oz Climashield quilt

I agree with those numbers for me even hanging.
I firmly believe, with adequate under insulation, I don't lose anything hanging Vs. the ground.

I would agree with this as well .... the thick quilt took up a lot of room in the pack. But since I don't normally use much of my extension collar, it wasn't a big deal.

in limited testing (all my CS quilts are full sized and I moved to 2/3 UQs) I lost 5-10* from TQ ratings to UQ ratings.
It is easy to suppliment UQ performance with a small sit pad sized piece of insulation under your butt or shoulders if needed.

my summer set-up (50* and up) would work in an Ion - but barely.
