Smile Some Expert advice please hugger strength

hi all would love some help

I want to try out different webbing types for tree huggers,

I have found some very light polyester 1" webbing and quite thin, but it only has a breaking strength of 400kg 880lb
is this enough or is it not enough safety margin.

I am not sure what the lowest safest figure would be.

    Amsteel 7/46 is 730kg or 1600lb I think.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks

I'm no expert, but when I was putting together my first hammock setup I ended up just using the straps from a set of tie downs like you'd use in a pickup truck. I don't know the exact weight limit on them, but I'm fairly certain it was less than 880 lbs and they worked just fine for me. I think for most people, the choice between Amsteel or webbing is just a matter of personal preference. Hopefully someone with a bit more technical knowledge will be able to shed some light for you.

As a baseline standard all of us vendors that make straps work with materials with a min break rating of 1000 pounds....and move upward from there. it does not take much of a bad hang angle for a 200 pound person to put 2x, 3x even 4 times that in force on the suspension.

Everyone's level of comfort regarding safety is different. Some people like safety factors of 10:1, while others go down to 2:1 or so.

The reality of the situation, is that the tree straps will have roughly your body weight on each one, if your hang angles are about 30 degrees. 7/64th amsteel does have a 1600lb rating, but tying any knots in it very dramatically reduces its strength (down to about ~30-50% of its rated strength). Woopies keep it closer to 90-95% of its original strength.

I personally have straps rated at 1500lbs, and 7/64 amsteel that I tie evenk and/or larkshead knots to the webbing, and have had no problems. I also found I have more like a 40-45 degree hang angle most of the time, which reduces some of the load.

My feeling is that 800lbs should be more than enough.

    That sounds familiar.
Check out the tests I did here,

I am using that webbing myself now, 4:1 safety factor is enough for me. (I'm 90kg).

If i made a tree hugger with it and sent it to you, would it be possible to give it a test? Not a vid just some figures.

It looks like a lot of work to set it all up?

Mostly it's a question of your comfort and goals.

For instance, for day-use, I use a hammock made of Argon67 with whoopie slings made of 1.75mm Black dyneema. The minuscule weight lets me justify bringing it on weight conscious outings. My suspension also still has about a 2x safety factor with this set up. I hang low, enter and exit carefully, and fully expect a failure at some point.

For overnight use, I step it up to dynaglide for suspension. That gives me the peace of mind I need to sleep soundly, even in sub-optimal hang.

I use straps sold by our cottage vendors. For my peace of mind and safety. I never know when my grandchildren will get in my hammock all at once. Hike your own hike and have fun out there. And if you are a super ultra light camper--that is fantastic--as you lead the way in light weight innovation.
