    Zippable Stuff Sack

I'm looking to build a stuff sack from a backpack type material, but would like it to zip open so it will lay flat when not stuffed. I'm not sure what the lateral strength various zippers are or what kind of load a "fully compressed" down bag/quilt would exert on the stuff sack.

Has anyone ever made a stuff sack that zipped from one end to the other?

Draw strings with Cinch straps would make it easier and more than likely most zipper would bust when you keep compressing them and putting pressure against it. I've busted way too many tent and gym bags overstuffing them.

I think coderpitt is on to something, the draw string with lock is probably the way to go. Zippers can catch on the materials you stuffed into the bag when you try to close them. Zippers can bust when the bag is over stuffed. Not that seams for draw strings can't also tear, but I think it would be a better option.

What if he made an oversized zippered stuff sack with cinch straps? That would relieve pressure on zipper and possibly reduce chance of catching gear in zipper. The cinch straps would do the compressing.

Why do you want backpack-type material and a zipper? That's going to weigh a ton. And why would a stuff sack need to lay flat when not stuffed? Most stuff sacks are relatively weightless, inconsequential things (especially if you use cuben fiber).

There is the market of several manufacturer's like Granite Gear and Mountain Laurel Designs that offer cube style stuff sacks that do zip across length wise. Is that what you mean? I have a couple of the sil ones from Granite Gear which is how I transport my down in the bottom of my pack.

I guess without knowing my thought process, it does seem like a bizarre project, but here is where I am going.

I recently made my wife an under quilt; it turned out so nice and warm that I wanted to make myself one next. However, once in the stuff sack, her quilt is still quite large. I over stuffed hers due to the fact that she sleeps very cold, so the same size quilt for me would pack smaller, but I plan to make mine longer due to my height.

Because of the amount of space the compressed quilt takes up, I thought it would be nice to lash it to the bottom of my pack where my tent roll/sleeping pad once occupied during my ground dwelling days. But I am concerned about durability and the stuff sack getting snagged on something while hiking, so I thought to make it from a more durable and water proof material like the ones backpacks are made from.

Then I thought about integrating the stuff sack into the bottom side of the UQ so that I can turn it over and zip it up on itself then stuff the remainder of the quilt into the resulting tube. Anyone remember the "Popples" stuffed toys from the 80's?

Thus the reasoning behind a “zippable” stuff sack that would lay flat when open.

However, after researching a little bit more, I think I will go with a waterproof stuff sack of a more traditional design with a thin fleece lining that will reverse and become a pillow when stuffed with my spare clothes.

I just want to use something that will be water resistant and durable enough to be lashed to the exterior of my pack.

use a stuff sack with compression straps and trash bag inside to lash to the bottom of your pack, that is what I used for my sleeping bag in my " ground days"

Sure. These are handy to have around and I've built many.
Here's one that I happen to have sitting around in the workshop.
