    DIY Fleece underquilt

Had to give this a try and see what a 46x70 piece of 100 GSM Fleece would do as an under quilt. I was not prepared to be impressed as I already have A couple UQ'S That I forked out nearly 3 bills for LOL.

Made with 2 yards fabric store fleece and 10 feet of 1/8 shock cord with some sew on cord locks

Foot and head uses twin 1/8" cord and grosgrain pulls stitched up with white thread for easy grabbing.

Ended up weighting just under a pound.

Ended up working pretty good so I made a few mods to it and sold it to my hiking friend for cost of materials.

I modded it with a baffled extra panel along the back that allows a reflectix pad to slide in.
Here it is in use on a 50 degree hike. Not super warm but keeps his wife happy

I've been curious about using fleece. I like my fleece clothing as long as it's not windy. I've seen several 50* fleece sleeping bags, Coleman has one for $17 and I've wondered what temperature I could go down to with that and an UQP. Fleece is terrible at blocking wind, but Im thinking for warm weather hanging.

I tried a fleece underquilt for my bedroom hammock. It may have been something I was doing wrong, but even with dialing it in, it was always kind of drafty. The fleece didn't cut airflow very well. My double layer fleece topquilt is amazing though!

That's what I was thinking would happen. I have a sewing machine on the way and have been trying to decide on light warmer weather UQ's. Seems like fleece would be good for a TQ doubled up though, like you have.

I follow a hammock group on facebook, a guy made a fleece UQ with a nylon outside. Looked very well done. I thought it was a pretty cool idea.

Every day is a good day.

In the early summer I fold a piece of fleece in half & throw it in my super shelter bottom protector.

    Works pretty good.

I was thinking that using fleece and a pattern for a PLUQ with a wind proof cover might be the way to go.

Maybe a wind stopper fleece fabric?

I am going down this route myself.I hang in the rain forest during the winter and do not want to deal with wet down.I rarely see temps down to freezing.I am tired of fighting my pad.I am going to do some experimenting.

I have the same issue with using down for UQ. Most places I camped, dampness was an issue. I started with fleece, using a stock fleece bag and using something outside for wind blocking. It's good for warmer weather, but below about 50 I had to bolster with other things. I could still use the fleece, but it would start to get chilly.
