    If I remember correctly, they were introduced back in the 1950s by the USFS, to help maintain the open balds, along w/ allowing a few ranchers to free range their cattle in the warmer months.
    The weather is to brutal to leave the cattle there in the winter. They say a few ponies are often lost during the winter.

    They also maintain the open balds w/ some controlled burning as well.
