    Whoopie Bury Length

I've looked through as many previous threads as I could find about Whoopie Slings, and I'm wondering about the bury length.

I recently got some 1/8" Amsteel Blue and made a set of slings(very simple by the way). I made my bury about 9" long, which makes them about 8-1/2" long after the expansion from feeding the line through the inside. They work great, but I can't help wondering if anyone has tried a shorter bury.

Some Samson literature called for a bury of two fid lengths. A fid for 1/8" line is only 2-5/8" long. That would make a bury of only 5-1/4". Has anyone tried this short of a bury?

The only thing to be gained is the minimum distance to hang from, but you could probably save almost a foot, which could come in handy.

Someone asked last week and it was said that 21x the diameter, is the golden rule. Can't find it tho, do the math.

That comes out to 2-5/8" - one fid length. I think that would be too short for a whoopie bury.

Jerry - For Amsteel 1/8" 12-strand Samson recommends 3-1/2 fids for the adjustable bury. Thats a little short of 9-1/4 inches.

For the fixed eye (locked brummel splice), 2-1/4 fids, or about 5-7/8 inches.

    I'd stick with Samson's instructions.

    PS: 1 fid = 21 x rope dia.

Thanks Knotty. I actually had that pdf saved...forgot all about it. The two fid lengths I was thinking of must have been for the fixed eye.

Just for kicks tonight I think I'll try some short buries(4-6") and see how they hold. I'll report back afterward.

An oft quoted downside to a whoopie suspension is that it increases the minimum distance between trees. Is that why you're trying to reduce the bury?

You can attach to the straight section between the two eyes with the marlin spike method when space is at a premium. So no need to reduce the bury and take risks.

Yes, I was looking for the minimum hang distance.

I tried a 4" bury, gives about 3-1/2" when expanded over the thru-cord. I gave it a vigorous bounce test and it held as well as a 9" bury.

Just for safety's sake I have made mine 6" long. I have no concerns about the safety of these buries. So my minimum hang distance is down to about 20" + hammock length. A tree hugger with marlin spike hitch + my whoopie sling take about 10" per end.

    I'd stick with Samson's instructions.
I am kinda shocked that the sling decreases the strength of the rope by 40%! I realize knots can cut strength by up to 80% (rule of thumb is 50%), but thought a whoopie sling would do so much better than that. Oh well, live and learn.

And that's why extreme caution needs to be taken when throwing around stated static break strength (NOT that Knotty was) as if it were an absolute number and applicable in real life. And why the "rule of ten times" is often used in professional rigging circumstance. As in, a 200lb hiker needs a 2,000lb line in order to have a reasonable margin for safety.

That's a great link. Thanks for sharing it!

I thought the straight bury method was much better and didn't reduce the strength that much. The Samson instructions show a weave bury at the dead eye, which would reduce the strength more than a straight bury, as I understand.

Yes... As I understand it its the brummel that decreases the sling. A straight bury with a stiched dead eye only decreases the rating by 5-7%.
