Thumbs up The soon-to-be-named webbing friction lock/adjuster

I've received permission from Richard to post this and he saw no conflict as I'm not asking for funding or sales. I sincerely hope that you will help me get the word out about this yet-to-be-named device because I believe that it can help make setup and take down of hammocks using webbing much easier. This device is patent pending and has more applications than hammocking, and the patent reflects that.

Please note, the blog exists on my current site where I sell custom sleeping bags. These bags are NOT designed for hammocking, it's just that it's the site I have to make this blog post until I can get an official site up. I don't want you to buy a sleeping bag; that's not why I'm here.

Here is a copy of the message I have sent out. Please feel free to share it, and there is a short video showing how it works in the blog post linked below.

I love hammock camping (I have a Clark Jungle Hammock, a Hennessy Hammock, and a Warbonnett BlackBird) and when using webbing straps to suspend my hammock I found that the traditional metal triangles used to create the friction on the webbing that held the hammock up were difficult to undo (I like hanging it tight).

And once, I got so frustrated in trying to take my hammock down, that I just cut the webbing.

    Smiley-Angry.png

That frustration led me to develop a device that not only allows for quick tightening of the webbing, but it also allows you to quickly and easily release that tension to loosen the webbing, no matter how tightly it is pulled.

Giving this product a name that creates some curiosity and is sticky has been a challenge, and so I’m turning to you and your creativity to help me out.

If you don’t see a name you like in the poll on this page (http://pakanuni.com/blog/the-soon-to...-lockadjuster/), and have one that you would like voted on, please enter it in the “other” option. It will be added to the poll as an option.

The free stuff for your participation and interest:

Everyone who votes AND signs up for the newsletter to keep you up-to-date on the development of this device (you will be directed to the newsletter sign up after you vote on the last question) will be placed in a drawing for 10 (1 to each of the 10 who are drawn) of these soon-to-be-named widgets, and the people who submit the top 3 names for this widget (leave a comment on this page letting me know which name you entered, kinda critical to identifying you as one of the winners!) will also get 2 of their own for free once this project is funded.

And just to be clear, I'm not asking for funding or sales, just your input on 3 questions, naming this device, what webbing width you use when you hang your hammock, and if having this device made in the USA is important to you.

Share this poll with your friends, tell them to vote for your option (if they like it)

One vote per person. Thank you so much for your help!

Please go to: http://pakanuni.com/blog/the-soon-to...-lockadjuster/ to see a video of the device and participate in the poll.

This poll ends March 9th 2016 at midnight.

Your input is greatly appreciated, and I'll monitor this thread to answer any questions you have about it.

    Thanks.

    John

Welcome. I'm not a webbing user (whoopies), but what exactly do you mean that you like "hanging it tight?" Tighter than a 30* hang angle?

I'm just curious if the solution you provide is a solution that could be avoided entirely by not "hanging it tight." I know I had huge problems with whoopies precisely because I was trying to "hang it tight," which meant that the whoopies would not release.

I particularly like the BlackBird, and it came standard with the triangles and webbing. The ridgeline keeps the hammock at the right angle, I pull the webbing tight to prevent me from having to reach up higher on the trees, especially when they are farther apart. And doing that with the triangles creates a lot of tension that is very difficult to release.

This may not be a problem that you have, so it may not be a solution for you at this time.

What I have found is that the webbing coupled with this yet-to-be-named device has made adjusting angles and taking down the hammock so much easier, even when there is not a lot of tension on the webbing to begin with.

I'm interested because I'm addicted to anything cool that has to do with hammocks. Any idea on a weight? Or maybe titanium

    Thank you!

Weight, about 2oz, and for any hammocker who uses it, they really only need 1.

I have thought about titanium. There will most likely be another poll about that, and hopefully you have signed up for the newsletter. All updates will be sent through that, primarily.

    I just saw your edit.

I had thought about that, and I have found that using the device is more convenient and easier than the triangles or rings. That is just my experience, though.

I wrote Shug to ask if he would be willing to test one, but haven't heard back from him, yet. I was pleasantly surprised to see that he's on these forums!

Sounds like you aren't shooting for the 30* angle on your suspension. As always you can HYOH but sounds like you might want to make some adjustments.

Sorry, I'm new to the acronyms. "HYOH" means what? And is there a link to a glossary??

Judging by the picture and the "answer", I think it's safe to say you hang at much less than the universally recommended 30° angle.Surprising to hear you have a problem with the standard WB suspension with so many happy, and fiercely loyal, customers out there.

Could your problem stem from an improper hang, and not the hardware you're using?? How are these any different than the other designs out there?

I love it when a plan comes together. That's a real solution to a problem I know I've had with my BB before. Your widget should be standard issue on every strap suspension. I voted and signed up. Best of luck to you on your project
