    New man

Good morning all, I found this site by "accident", and have already used several days on reading, learning and bursting out in laughter. Great stuff, obviously written by people who enjoy the little extra in life, and a level of expertise which can only spring from real enthusiasm. I am impressed. I am not going to throw away my tents.....yet, but have found a whole new dimension for trips outdoors.
A bit about myself, I am a 59 year old Brit, living in Oslo, Norway, and use the forests and mountains as and when I am able. My job in an "outdoor kindergarden" is he best I have had, and the worst paid. The kids are great, and we are in the forest most days, and in all weathers. My wife and daughter are enthusiastic dog-racers, on skiis and bicycles, I have a support function, as I am too slow on skiis, and the dogs get pissed off, so we spend a lot of time outdoors, or in cars travelling to races and looking for misplaced kit.
Another interest is travelling by motorbike, last year I took time off to ride to India from Oslo, a lifetime ambition, which was fantastic, though I had to ship back because the Pakistan/Iran took a turn for the worse, and it was too cold to drive north. I must mention that I took a hammock with me, and only used it once, and a tent would have been more appropriate then. Sorry about that.
I am really looking foreward to reading more on this forum, I have a lot to learn.
    Peter, in Oslo

Welcome to the group Peter ... always good to meet new folks! Sounds like you've had a few adventures! All the way from India huh ... not to shabby! Well hope to hear more about that some time.

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

Welcome to HF, Peter! Looking forward to hearing more hammock experiences from the other side of the pond.

    Welcome to HF!
You have quite the playground there. I have good memories of Norway, even Oslo, being there as a Boy Scout for a World Jamboree. Great hiking.
You've found a great source of info here at HF and many friends as well.

Thanks for the hearty welcome, I have spent the last couple of days reading up on hammocking thanks to a bout of bacon-fever (H1A1), but we have snow and wind from NNW so I'll wait for some better weather before I hang myself.
I have often travelled/trekked with a net hammock, but have only tried to sleep in it once - it was not much use, better to keep kit in. Norway, as most other mountainous regions, seems to consist of slopes or bogs, finding a level tenting place without stones, roots, ants or bog is difficult below the treeline. Tents do make sense in our climate, but a good spot is hard to find, so I hope what I have learned on this forum will be transformed into practical use, and save me a lot of grief.
I bought a ENO setup on the basis of an article in a Norwegian motorcycle magasine, and have had positive experiences with it so far. My personal feeling is that all the extra padding/isolation for winter hanging must take more space and weigh more than a small tent, and if there is snow on the ground finding a suitable pitch is much easier.
Thanks again for the warm welcome.
    Peter, in Oslo
