Adding Pull Out Tabs to a Tarp

I want to add pull out tabs to the sides of my JRB 11x10 tarp. Kinda like those on the Warbonnet MJ or SuperFly. I've got a couple of questions before I start this:

1. How heavy of reinforcing material do I need?
2. Is the reinforcing material sewn to the inside, outside, or both sides of the tarp?
3. Are the tabs sewn ONLY to the reinforcing material, or are they sewn through BOTH the reinforcing material and the tarp?
4. Any magic as to where I position the tabs, or just wherever I want them?

I know I may be overthinking this; but the last thing I want to do is actually weaken the tarp by adding the tabs.

I used silnylon but doubled my reinforcing patches inside and out.

2. Is the reinforcing material sewn to the inside, outside, or both sides of the tarp?

Inside and out. Seam seal them.

3. Are the tabs sewn ONLY to the reinforcing material, or are they sewn through BOTH the reinforcing material and the tarp?

I sewed them to the outside only.

4. Any magic as to where I position the tabs, or just wherever I want them?

Kinda ..... get some grip clips and mess with that so that you will be happy. Getting ready to add some on my Speer Winter Tarp and put mine .... I played a bit. Off-hand I would say on my SWT they were 27" down from ridgeline and 44 inches in from edge of outer tarp door..

I know I may be overthinking this; but the last thing I want to do is actually weaken the tarp by adding the tabs.

I am glad I did to my tarp.

Grip clips are great--you can move them around and try different positions before "committing" with the thread injector. That's actually the phase I'm in right now with my JRB 10x11--finding the right spots to sew loops. Here's a photo of mine--I added some side pull-outs on the 11-foot sides so I could set up in "doors-closed" mode without having to turn it to the 10-foot ridgeline.

Why would you want "permanent" pull outs?

Seems if the grip clips work, they would be much better than sewn in pull outs since you can move them to suit the conditions.

And the difference in weight between a grip clip and the sewn in pull out isn't going to be very much.

bonsaihiker and TeeDee -- that's an excellent point about the grip clips. I remember seeing the thread a couple of months ago about the grip clip product but I can't seem to find it now.

Do you remember the brand and what store you got them at by chance?

Hey RF ... do you leave them on or take them off each time you take the tarp down? Notice any wear around the attachment point?

Thanks again. I just ordered some. Actually I got a set of both the Light Fabric and the Micro -- I'll try both and see which works best.
