Trooper - please don't feel the need to return to lurking. Almost any other question and there wouldn't even be an issue...we just try to limit the negativity on HF, and this was a passionate topic when it came up so I don't want that negative vibe to come again. The points are valid, and justified in most cases IMO, but they're in the archives and don't need to be repeated unless there's something new to add to the discussion.
So please don't return to lurking, and anyone else who's interested in the HH patent discussion should read the links slowhike provided.

'he uses the THREAT of legal action' exactly what I'm talking about--attitude.
I love my Hennessy but I think my next one will be a Blackbird. I just like what I have heard about it.

I think Tom's hammocks have some very good ideas and used them for a long time. But Tom can be difficult to deal with if you catch him on a bad day. Plus, as mentioned, his defense of his patents really rub a lot of people the wrong way. While everyone has a right to patent original ideas, I believe his fixed structured ridgeline was already in the public domain when he was granted that particular patent.
I disagree with there isn't much difference between a Blackbird and a Hennessey. The Blackbird has a side entry with zippers, the Hennessey has the underneath entry with velcro. I lived with the Hennessey design for quite a while, but my sleeping habits changed somehow and I found myself opening the underside entry with my knees in the middle of the night. Then I discovered other hammocks and found a side entry with zipper to work so much better for me - plus the velcro in Hennessey's bottom entry design tends to tear up the seat of my pants.
You have to give Tom some credit. I think he pretty much created the camping hammock market and has a lot of inovative ideas in keeping the overall weight of a complete and viable replacement for a tent down.
