DIYers & Cottage Vendors: CL & WS...or...Just WS for Sewn Channel

I've completed a few DIY projects (table cloth hammocks & down UQ). I just ordered a RSBTR netless hammock kit (charcoal grey Robic) and will make a sewn channel hammock. All the hammocks I've seen have a continuous loop through the channel and then connected via larks foot to a whoopie sling.

Here's the question... Why the CL? Why not just run the locked end of the whoopies through the channel and pull the adjustable loop through?

Thanks in advance for your wisdom...

I'm definitely new at this but I know that you can just use the whoopies through the channels. I actually bought a hammock that was rigged that way. I guess with continuous loops it's just easier to change out the suspension.

I think a lot of people do that with great success. I've never understood how they pack their hammock after a rain or heavy dew without the whoopie getting the hammock wet. I use CL's as a means of isolating the dry from the wet.

That certainly works, and I did my first DIY hammock that way. The problem is if your suspension gets covered in sap or is otherwise dirty and you want to change it out then you have to take the whoopie slings out of the channel and thread something else through rather than just switching out the whoopie slings or another suspension that's connected to a continuous loop. The big advantages as I see it of having the continuous loops is that you can use the same suspension for a number of different hammocks rather than have have to make a new suspension for each hammock you use.

Wet whoopies = wet hammock. I personally use Dutch Whoopie Hooks on the adjustable loop of my whoopie sling, so I can easily detach the hammock from the suspension and pack it separately.

Also what splme said: use one suspension for multiple hammocks. I have at least 8 hammocks but only three or four suspensions.

You certainly can use whoopies in channels plenty of folks do. The downside is wet gear as others have mentioned. Also if you have less than optimal distance between trees you are stuck with what you have. With cl and detachable ws you can just hang your loop on your tree strap using your marlin spike hitch, or however you connect your whoopies. Doesn't happen often but i had it come up once and was glad for my loops.

That's what I was thinking as well (all the above), but wanted to make sure it was a matter of 'convenience' versus doing damage to the hammock fabric. Things to ponder...

All my hammocks have had the whoopies straight through the channel. It means that you can get the adjustable part of the whoopie closer to the hammock so can squeeze out those last couple of inches in a narrow hang.
I have also had some epic rain, and the amount of water that a whoopie sling holds is bugger all! It has certainly not made my hammock noticeably damp when hung up that evening.
Don't know how you American's get sap on your whoopies either, that has only ever happened on my tree straps...

I have Wilderness Logics gathered end hammocks with a ball on end. It's easy to larks head whoopie sling to hammock just below gathered ball. Easy on easy off--I leave mine attached. And there is no slip as far as I can tell.
