    Underquilt Protector and Pack Cover

Does anyone use a dual pack cover and UQ protector?
I have looked at a few sites and I see a pack cover/gear storage option and then just an UQ protector option.
Is there something else I am missing. Would the UQ protector work as a pack cover or does that take away the breathability feature?

Under Quilt Protectors are usually roughly equal to the length of a full length under quilt and this makes them a little large for a pack cover.

Not saying it couldn't be done with some creative shock cord use but you'd have a fair bit of extra fabric flopping around on the pack which could also be managed but might catch water here and there.

As for the material, some UQP's will have DWR material because they are designed to keep moisture off your gear. Now there are also UQP options that offer breathability and those would not work well as a pack cover.

If you are using a 3/4 length under quilt, you could go with a down sized UQP and that would be closer to a pack cover size.

    Lots of great info here:

I use a DIY gear hammock that doubles as a pack cover because it has be DWR'd and would do as a 3/4 UQP in a pinch. I happen to have run shock cord around the perimeter and have a cord lock or two to allow for some adjustability.

    Thanks.

I was looking for something to do triple duty.....blaze orange for game areas, a pack cover (though I do use a compactor bag inside) and also some wind protection on chillier nights. I do use a 3/4 length quilt, so maybe I can get away with a shorter version all rigged up just right.

I was not thinking that breathability was that important, but maybe it is......hmmmmm.

Breathability is the concern. An UQP is made from breathable fabrics and is meant to just cut down on wind and some rain spatters and spits. It's not waterproof beyond the DWR coating. If you used a non-breathable fabric like you would with a pack cover (e.g. silnylon, silpoly, and the like) it'll create a vapor barrier situation basically. You'll lose more than you gain once the down gets wet for the perspiration moisture.

As far as the extra material, it'll be a bit flappy, but enough shock cord can hold anything.

Then again, maybe you'll find some way to make it work! Give it a go and let us know how it works out!

Jacks R Better had a pack cover that was also a gear hammock last year at trail days. Works great.

JRB has a product that might be what you are looking for

DriDucks poncho and uqp, might have to add a couple more tabs or such to use as a pack cover alone
