This may, or may not help, but, I have a UGQ 3/4 Zepplin...and a 7 year old...and they are a perfect match. She is a bit small for a 7 year old, but not far off of average. I have no idea of the dimensions of it, but I can measure it when I gets back...now, a top quilt? Man, I dunno...I hope this thread takes off so I can some info myslef
Well, have you looked at "Rip Stop By the Roll" UQ kit? I think at that height, your kid would benefit for a grown up quilt set
The problem with kids is ... they grow too quickly. If you are buying, I would say get one that fits you, unless you are freakishly tall, and let him grow into it. If you are really into the DIY scene, then you can make one that will last a year, and then make another one that will last a year, etc.

Get a normal under quilt
Several reasons to consider just going adult size:
1.) kids grow fast
2.) kids wiggle when they sleep, thereby needing more coverage
3.) kids grow fast
4.) you can loan it to an adult friend thereby hooking them on this too
5.) kids grow fast

I made a standard 3/4 for my 9-yo daughter, fits her like a full size and she can grow into it. If she decides that she wants a longer quilt, well, she has two sisters behind her that can use the 3/4. I don't want her carrying unnecessary weight.
I haven't done her top quilt yet, but I'm thinking I want it to cover her head plus 3-4" to grow, and same philosophy as the UQ. Width will be her width x2 at the head with a taper yet to be determined.

I don't know about you kids but my 6 year old boys move around so much I just have them crawl down in their sleeping bags . They get a little extra on bottom that way and I don't have to worry about them being out from underneath top quilt .
Thanks for the replies, everyone. I think I'll go ahead and do 48 x 60 for the under quilt. Gonna have to think about the top quilt though. May just get him a cheapie sleeping bag for now.
