    First DIY Tarp is done!

I found this project more challenging then originally expected, mostly due to dealing with large amount of fabric that was slick and wanted to slide off the table when working. The flat felled seam went pretty well (much practice before hand). I struggled more on the reinforced tie-outs while sewing down the gross grain. I found that the material wanted to bunch up underneath when moving the tarp around and I actually sewed the back of the gross grain down to a different part of the tarp a couple times, thankfully close to edge.

Congrats! Making gear is a great experience and each new thing provides new leanings. It looks really nice.

Sharp tarp! While easy in some ways, those looongg seams present other challenges which it looks like you handled well. I can't tell you how many times I've inadvertently sewn a seam into something underneath the fabric, cursed, ripped the seam, and resewn. But you'd definitely think that I would have learned by now.

Nice, a tarp is on my MYOG list. I just finished a Costco underquilt and am starting on the matching top quilt. I think I'm hooked.

I have sewn some of my most beautiful hems and bar tacks only to find I caught an unintended bunch of tarp fabric...it's the worst. Great tarp, you will feel an extra sense of accomplishment in the first downpour.

Thanks everyone. So far I have cut my weight from my single person tent by over a pound. Without suspension my tarp weights in at 13.04 oz. My hammock, bug net and suspension weigh 29.30 oz for a total of 42.34 oz. My single person tent weights 65.52 oz.

Yeah, I have purchased the material for top and under quilts, but I am a little intimidated by them. It is my next project to complete but there is a lot of expense in them so I have been practicing on some cheap fabric...

Very nice job. I have considered doing a tarp, but that amount of fabric scares the H3LL out of me. I have made a UQ,TG, Stuff sacks, ridgline organizer....etc

It's really not too bad. I knocked out an underquilt in about 3-5 hours at about 1am last Saturday. First time I've used a sewing machine in years. If I can make it work, anyone can.

tarp looks good. I know I was intimidated when I made my first one but as long as your careful and measure twice you should be good. just take it slow when your sewing and don't be worried about having to rip seams and redo them if theyre not right.
