The backside is the "sock" part of the shelter so pulling out there does deform the interior space. The sock will self center when occupied so it does not require the rear pull outs but they do help keep it centered when front tarp is pulled "out" more than "down". If you arrive at camp after a long hike setting those up would not be necessary. It is nice to have the option to use either way and Grapenuts rear pullout is very light and simple. These are really designed for the hiker not the camper. A big tarp is always nice for just sitting around camp.
