    Overmountain Shelter

We are fairly new to hanging and have a Carvers Gap to US 19E trip planned for June. We plan to stay at Overmountain Shelter and Doll Flats, but I don't see any good spots to hang near the Overmountain Shelter, so we may end up tenting. Does anyone have any experience hanging there?

When I hung near Overmountain, it was just down the road slightly past the water source. Definitely not perfect like Doll Flats but it beats a tent. Maybe others will have some more options for you.

There are plenty of hang spots behind the shelter. We had a group of around 10 behind there a couple years back. I think you could hang in the loft if you are lucky enough to not have a crowd. We were there in Feb and it was a little like Woodstock in multiple ways. It was a foggy night but the fog coming out of the shelter was man made. I bet if you check out MM's videos for the RHK hangs you would see the hang spots.

Here is an old photo of the upper loft from 1993. Think it has been re-built. We were hiking on the AT and had to dry out. Pre-hammock days. Picture by Hickery.

LOTS of hanging sites at both locations. I hung inside Overmountain with a bit of ,,,,, inventiveness. Was through there in 2008.
    Have a good trip!!!

I actually just spent the night there the other weekend on a trip from Iron Mt Gap to US-19e. I ended up hanging in the barn, on the second level. You've gotta be careful about where you hang, but if it's not too crowded you could realistically fit maybe two hammocks from the rafters. Many more than that and you'd be hogging the space. Wouldn't anchor both hammocks on same set of rafters though. The anchor points I found were solid, but again, I had to do a fair bit of inspection before I was confident. If you're looking at Shug's photo, I hung my hammock from the top left corner of the photo to the back middle wall of the barn. Great shelter!

Thanks for the help, guys. We aren't fond of staying in shelters, and the available trees appear to be pretty far from the big flat spots all where our ground dweller friends will be setting up, so we might just go to the ground to for this trip! I watched several videos, and the only place I saw to hang was between the shelter and the privy! lol
