    ENO with slap straps....heavy.

I bought my brother a Eno Single nest and Pro slap straps today as a Christmas gift and while i like the quality and lay of the Eno hammocks i find them to be heavy compared to my Speer.
My brother and i are backpackers so we are both somewhat weight conscious.

Weighed on accurate digital food scales.

Both hammocks are in stuff sacks with carabiners.
Speer complete with ring buckles....20 oz
Eno with pro slap straps......30 oz

Correct me if i'm wrong but those slap straps seem heavy say.....compared to the webbing Ed uses.

It could also be the amount of webbing. IIRC, the slap straps are relatively long.

My ENO double with 3' whoopie slings weighs in at 19.5 ounces. My 6' straps and 2 CAMP nano biners add another 6.7 ounces.

Just looked at Eno's site and yah those are some really heavy straps! Not sure how much webbing they use up making each of those small loops but it just based on length that is over an oz per foot of length. Check out some of the webbing we have at Arrowhead. We have webbing straps that are closer to 6 feet per oz, a big savings in weight over those slap straps.

Being the dubious owner of a set of slap straps, let me suggest that you consider switching to a poly strap. This has been beat to death, but slap straps are made of nylon and they streeeeeeeetch. Enough so, that if you set your hammock at a reasonable height at night, you may wake up on the ground. My slap straps are now gathering dust in my gear closet. I switched out the stock suspension for a ring buckle suspension. It's a much better choice.

If you ever go places that have fun things like rope swings and such take one along with you. They're great for throwing over a tree limb and making a quick swing out of.

You're right but the idea of seeing or even knowing those horrid things had a slow painful demise gives me a sort of warm feeling inside

    Did I say that

It boggles the mind that the same people who get a hammock so right can get suspension so wrong.

    So....it is what it is.

I'll print this page out and put it in the stuff sack with his slap straps and a card "Merry Christmas Bro".
