I was playing around with Google Sketchup and did this 12 x 10 tarp design. It has no center ridgeline and only uses 7 yards of fabric rather than 8. The seams are 2.5' off the center line of the tarp.
Still learning about Sketchup, but it is a pretty nice 3D drawing program. Hard to read some of the dimension figures. The cat cuts are 5".

Thanks, this was the 2nd iteration. After I screwed up the first one I realized that it would be easier to start with a 12 x 10 square and add the cuts. Made it so much easier and accurate. Lots of nice features in that program.
Pretty cool idea. I've done something similar for a customer - but it was rectangle.
You could make the same tarp with a ridgeline seam using 5' outside edges instead of 6' with the same 7 yards.
Doing it this way does make seam sealing not as crucial though. Clever idea, and good work with SketchUp. That's what I use most of the time.

Yes, you sure could. Might save a bit on the weight, but I wonder how the extra angle would affect the coverage. Here is a smaller tarp that I made using the same technique. I never did finish this one...I think this one only used 4 yards of material.
Is the ridge on a tarp with no sewn seam stronger, or less strong, than the ridge on a tarp with a sewn seam?

I had never thought of using scetch up for this. I had messed with blender (free 3d rendering software) to do a tarp or two but they were way more basic, I just wanted to see what would happen if I added tie outs to certain points on my hennessy hex tarp.
