He got new ones for the trip, broke them in, and the soles came off. So he sent them back and got replacement boots. He broke those in, and THE EXACT SAME THING happened again! But he's a stubborn bugger, so he brought them anyway, and repaired them with wire when the soles finally came off completely, hahaha.
