We are planning a Grayson Highlands hike after the girls get out of school for the summer. Our trip to Uwharrie is a test hike to make sure the girls are as excited to hike as they are to think about it and talk about it.

    Go twice
Ok I'm glad to hear you are going up there Grayson... my two daughters have really enjoyed it up there over the years and I can't think of a place more exciting when you are a kid.

Another suggestion I will throw out for later is there are numerous places with nice swim holes where you can backpack a bit & then do some swimming. Wilson Creek area or Doughton Park off the top of my head. That of course assumes you are willing to do some lollygagging.

Ha Ha. Reminds me of the story of somebody buying a pony at Grayson & putting it in their backseat on the ride home. Careful what you wish for.

A ranger at Grayson told me she was present when that happened.

Yeah and I enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks for the tip about eating dates. I think they helped a lot

I guess this is OK seeing it is about the Uwharries:
Last Sunday night I was camped down at Dutchman's Creek at the foot of Lick Mountain. About half hour before dark along comes a guy in shorts, a bright yellow short sleeve shirt and a bright orange narrow brim hat. No pack. No water. ? He was holding his cell phone out in front of him like using it as a compass or something. I startled him when I asked him where he was headed. He said he left his car on "the dirt road" and was on his way back. I told him the trail continued across the creek and off he went up Lick Mountain. I had a jacket and a warm hat on already. Don't know what became of him but I'll be he has a tale to tell!
