    20*F Down Underquilt Instructable

    Hey everyone!

I've been working on my DIY Down UQ and TQ projects (after TONS of reading on hammock forums!). I've completed both and have a couple test hangs in now. I'll be taking them on their first backpacking trip on a 35 mile leg of the AT in a couple weeks, but I don't think I'll be able to get them down to the "rated" 20*F until next winter. So far, they're crazy warm and comfy. Here is a link to my Instructable for the underquilt. I'm hoping to get the same done for the top quilt soon. Hopefully, this will help others jump in and make their own as well. Let me know what you think!

This is an excellent resource for anyone thinking about doing an UQ! Did you do one for the TQ as well?
Also total cost of materials would be helpful (if that's something you want to disclose)

I'll admit I always thought the idea of baffles was very difficult to wrap my head around but you did a great job of explaining how to sew it all up. Good work Dave!

Thanks! Glad you found it helpful. I'll be doing an instructable for the TQ as well, but haven't gotten to that one yet. I definitely don't mind disclosing the material costs. Keep in mind that some of this has to be bought in larger quantities than you need for one project (cordlocks, grossgrain, etc.)

    0.66 oz MEMBRANE 10 taffeta nylon - Burnt Orange - 3 yards - $29.85
    0.66 oz MEMBRANE 10 taffeta nylon - Moroccan Blue - 3 yards - $29.85
Gutermann Mara 70 100% polyester thread - Burnt Orange - 1 spool - Free from RBTR or $3.60
Gutermann Mara 70 100% polyester thread - Moroccan Blue - 1 spool - Free from RBTR or $3.60
    0.5 oz NS50 Noseeum mesh - 3 yards - $20.25
    3/8" grossgrain ribbon - 1 section (5 yards) - $2.80
    1/16" Shock cord - 1 section (25') - $4.25
    1/8" Shock cord - 1 section (25') - $4.25
    Mini cordlocks - 1 package (12) - $2.80
800 fill power water resistant goose down - 12.2oz* - For this one, I paid $7.19 per ounce by buying 2lbs from downlinens.com. 12.2oz comes to $87.69. You can also buy exactly 12oz of 800fp duck down from RBTR for $100.
    Shipping: $6.95

Total cost (not considering surplus materials): $188.69

Of course, I could have just bought an HG Incubator 20 for $250 (your time is definitely worth the saved $70...). But this is close to 4oz lighter than HG's advertised weight, (maybe not as durable?) and I got to do it myself. The top quilt is roughly the same material cost. It's a couple more ounces of down, but basically no added cost for thread, shockcord, cord locks, etc., since you'd already have that. I also plan to make a down pillow and/or hat or some other small project with the remaining Membrane fabric and down.

Here are a couple pictures of the TQ for a preview:

Thank you for the information! I think since you were going to tackle both the TQ and the UQ you definitely saved yourself some real money in the long run. I DIY my gear because I like to not necessarily for the cost savings. So sometimes the $70 saved is worth it.

I'm also from Canada so $70USD saved is like $2,476CAD
