    Poinsett backpacking hang

Yesterday I got out again with my son for an overnight backpacking trip. We had some new gear, and I had some ideas for ways to keep him.more entertained than the last trip we took in March. This time he had the Hammock Gear Burrow 20, and we both had new ridgeline gear storage from HG. The low overnight got down to 32, so I was pushing it with the JRB Shenandoah 40 and HG 40 underquilt. I used the hot water trick and it helped a lot, but it was still a cold night.

We got in about 12-15 miles over the two days with some good hills and better terrain than the last trip. I brought a couple of games, but what I really wanted to do was introduce my son to Geocaching. He loved it! We found 4 caches, couldn't find 2, and realized 2 were in a section of the park closed due to flooding.

As we were finishing dinner we heard coyotes, that didn't go over well with my son. He was scared. I guess at one point in the night he heard something, couldn't wake me (earplugs) and he ended up using his phone and calling Mommy! Oops! He had fun, and loved geocaching! There will be more trips.

Bet the coyote thing becomes a bragging point with his friends : I played Xbox last night ; what did you do? My dad and I slept in the woods and had to fight off a pack of wild coyotes. ( These things grow in the telling).

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing them.

This was the second in 2 months. The first one was a learning experience, I learned from it! I altered what I brought, and had plans for after arriving at camp. Those things went a lot better. I still need to work on making sure I'm meeting all his needs, such as not wearing ear plugs or headphones while sleeping! Oh well, another learning experience. But he had fun and is already talking about the next one. I think the next one we'll step it up and hit he AT!

I just ordered a Dutch Argon Winter Sock, that should help me push down on those colder nights when I'm out with my son and letting him use the warmer quilts.

Looks like some great time together that neither of you will soon forget! We geocache as well-- goes hand-in-hand with any outdoor adventure.

Maybe you could make him a "tug line" going from his hammock to yours. That way he might feel safer knowing he can get your attention if he feels the need. Anything to keep him from calling Mom!

Klauss, that is an awesome idea! I was also thinking about trying to find some closer trees and both being under the same tarp, I have my Monster Fly from Mountain Wilderness Gear, so I think they'll both fit under it in a shallow pitch.
