I uploaded a few pictures of one of my homemade knotted hammocks in the gallery. It probably takes me longer to fumble through the upload process than to make the hammock. I am somewhat ignorant of modern technology.

What's the primary knot you use for that? I was thinking it's something similar to a sheet bend, but I'm not sure.
The sheet bend is the knot used. Many, many of them. You must determine what you want for the mesh gap and come up with a guage of that size. Window trim is available and what I use most of the time.
(The width of your palm was what they taught me to use. That rubs your hand raw in short order.)
The first two or three rows are the most critical. You can grab the wrong loop if you are not careful, simply because everything is bunched together. Once you get a few rows done it gets easier to keep everything straight.
I was taught to make a long chain first, then gather it up and string the loops through. I no longer do it that way. Once I returned to the States the experimentation began in earnest. Higher quality string became plentiful and splitting twine (plastic) and spinning string was a thing of the past. This left more time to try new techniques.
Shuttles or needles and guages can be purchased from outfits like Janns netcraft. They are plastic and really quite tough.
How do you do that endwhipping? I want to use it on a walking stick
