It would be ok if you had something between you and it... the stuff is a vapor barrier, so it can get clammy feeling against your skin.

Shirt test was a big success!

It rained all day long. At 1300, temps dropped from 44 to 37 in half an hour. I was sitting in a tree, and the wind was blowing about 9 mph. My hands and feet were freezing, but my torso was as comfortable as if I were sitting at home in my living room!

I was way under dressed, wearing a poly tee, light wool vest, Insultex vest, light overshirt, light camo overshirt and a mil-surplus poncho.

I found that having nothing but a tee between you and the Insultex is slightly clammy, so I put the wool vest underneath. I never noticed the Insultex again.

Good stuff! I can't wait to try it in multiple layers, and a properly sewn garment.

Good test. Uh, why were you in a tree? I went kayaking this morning. Air and water temps in the high 40s. No insultex was used however...here's the pics...

Hehehe Just got my big bag of Insultex today, and now I think get the joke.

Mac, is there any particular pattern that you plan on using when you make a finished version of your vest? I've been thinking about making one with fleece and insultex for paddling, but I don't have any experience with making clothing.

I have a canvas vest in my closet that I'll use as a pattern. I may use removable sleeves.

I'm thinking of making the Insult Vest just like an UQ Insert... lightweight fabric facing both sides, designed to supplement a jacket, as an inner layer garment.

The pits probably should be of a breathable fabric. The neck should zip closed, so it can be vented. The wrists and waist should be elastic, so that cold air does not intrude.

I'm not sure what fabric to put on the inside or the outside, but I think the vest should be made from scratch.

I have made vests before, but it's been a while!

BTW, MrPrez is thinking just what I am... this stuff might make great PJs for a hammocker!

    Wonderful test report Mac.

I remember me in a tree like you describe...sleet....crummy...
I dropped arrow after arrow from shivering

    Lots younger then....

I look forward to seeing the projects from the INSULTs
    Regards

What about making a half bag out of several layers of Insult and ripstop? Just enough to reach from the feet to the waist? Leave plenty of room for moving the feet around. I wonder how that would work for those who use a half UQ for those colder nights?

That's a great idea, John! Take care of CBS and Cold Feet, while extending your short UQ. Being a half bag, condensation might not be a problem.
