I'd like to hang under my deck. Is it safe?

    Hello, all.

I'd like your opinion on whether or not my deck is ok to hang from. It's definitely safe to walk on and have people over for a party. But I'm not sure if it's ok to hang a hammock underneath it. And if so, how exactly? I'm 6"2, 220lbs and I've got an eno double if that makes any difference. Pictures below. Any help greatly appreciated

I hang between two 6x6 deck posts and have no issues. Do you want to hang off of posts or joists? I've also hung from joists and rafters, no problem, as long as you use proper hardware.

How come? If it's your deck, screw in a few eye bolts where they work and set up a tarp ridgeline, and sandbag the guywires if your surface below is concrete. If it's wood, there's deck anchors you can buy on Amazon that slip between the slats. If you're at home base, weight factor isn't really a big deal.

I would not hang from 4x4 posts unless they were part of a system that included a cross pole that took some of the load. Like the TD set up. Just my $.02...

Someone posted a photo to reddit of a guy hanging on a 4x4 post on the beach. The post turned into toothpicks.

The thing is that the hammock wants to pull the two anchors sideways, and decks are designed to mostly take vertical loads. Perhaps if both your anchors were in the same joist or both went through one of those diagonal braces on the bottom of the deck into different joists (might not be long enough)? The Brace won't take your weight, but will take the sideway forces, and then the joists would hold your weight. I guess you could add a similar longer brace to the bottom of the joists wherever you wanted to hang?

Thanks for the responses everyone. And I was planning on hanging vertically from the joists, rather than laterally from the posts.
