The HH knot is just an old fashioned cleat lashing, using one side of the tree-hugger strap and the hammock rope as the two cleat horns. It's simple and has been holding large heavy things up for several millennia. It also does not slip. What's not to love?
No love here. I hate the tree huggers and Hennessy lashing.

I'll second that, but I do like the hammock part.

    Fanatic, Cannibal,

    Why?

The ring/buckles work so much better. Especially the buckles. You can hang from trees that are 20'+ apart. Tree width is a non factor. Much quicker and easier adjustments. If your method works well for you, then that's all that matters.

how does webbing vs. cord effect the possible distance between the trees?

You get to decide on how much length of webbing you want versus the stock cord.

Probably because I didn't start with them. My first set-up was straight webbing from the hammock to the tree. I tried the rings about 2 weeks later and was sold. The first time I used tree huggers they just seemed like too much of a hassle after using the rings.

On a side note, these buckles aren't bad either. I just got them set-up this past week and have given them a couple of quick test drives, no overnight yet.
