Reinforcement patches are another good idea. Maybe some pack material would be a good spot patch.

Thanks for the encouragement. If I get some sewing time tomorrow night I'm going to see what I can come up with.
I think it's better to use the same fabric for the hammock bed and the reinforcement. The idea is to make the transition from VERY STRONG (doubled fabric + webbing) to Moderately Strong (doubled fabric) to hammock bed (single layer fabric) pretty gradual. When very strong components are attached to much weaker ones, the failure often occurs right at the transition.

I doubt you will gain much unless you add a mini spreaderbar or you use two lines (one on each side of the tree).
It will give you the same effect as if you make a convex shaped end (outwards going curve on the foot end).
There is a small chance you can mimic a longer hammock but it depends on how you lay in the hammock and the ridge line length. Then your shoulder and feet acts as a sprederbar. I made a split end hammock some time ago and I guess it will behave somewhat similar.

I remember that post. Lot's of your projects start my mind going down paths that result in me thinking of something obscure like this one.

The more I read everyone's thoughts the more I'm hesitant to try it this particular idea of mine. I'll chew on it some more.
