The good thing about a hike like this is you can afford to experiment; even carrying heavier food. On long hikes I carry a dehydrated meal for dinner. I have packets of oatmeal with granola for the mornings but frankly, in the woods, I'm not big on breakfast but I LOVE that first cup of coffee! I usually carry the Starbucks instant.
I'm more into ultralight so it's heat water and rehydrate but frankly I've never loved dehydrated food. The one exception might be Mountain House lasagna and meat sauce; love that stuff!
For shorter hikes I like ramen noodles. You can buy a packet of dehydrated spices and vegetables called "ramen rescue". Google it and you'll find it. I love cooking ramen noodles and adding the ramen rescue packet.
I also like pepperoni and cheese, nuts, bread and peanut butter, etc.
Another really good option are the instant mashed potatoes, instant rice, etc. Wraps are always good and you can fill them with anything. I like the tuna packets for short hikes as well. The options are endless and only trial and error will show you what works for you.
And PS for some reason I love original Fritos on the trail!
Looking forward to seeing all of you. A few hours ago I just completed the Zion Traverse. After that intensity I'm really looking forward to Hawn!!

Thanks for the input, Gideon! I'll have a look around and see what I can come up with.

That's funny you should say that.
I had to go down there to Hawn and check it out because I was curious if I could really do it. I laced my boots up and loaded up my pack.
It damned near killed me, but I was able to hike past the first connector and into the tall canopy of pines.
That's a very nice area. I think they were pretty accurate about some of the trail being rugged. It was plenty rugged enough for me.
The good news is that I made it. I passed my trial run. I really did't know if I was in good enough shape to be able to do it.
It was a challenge, but it was so well worth it. What a beautiful area.
See you all on the 5th.

I backpacked in and spent the night at the site on Friday. I screwed up on the way out and took the Pickle Creek trail back to the trailhead. Very pretty!

The weather's starting to cool off, the leaves are starting to turn, and today it's misty and overcast; everything that makes one think of heading to the quiet woods! Too early to get any kind of reliable forecast but preliminary indicationis are highs in the low 60's, lows in the low 40's. Just about perfect! Not too cold but enough to really test cold weather gear. Cool enough to make a fire feel glorious!
Just to confirm, I will be at the trail head on 5 November at or before 12:30 pm to hike in with Charlie and anyone else who's there. We'll hit the trail just after 12:30 pm. I'm traveling on business extensively the next two weeks so I may not be on the forum too much but I'll be there rain or shine!!

I am also planning to be there to hike in with you guys.

Sounds like fun! I'll try to make this one. It's been way too long since I've been backpacking.
