I've just taken the plunge and have gone for the summer crowsnest with the 900 down. It seems like this UQ would do all that I would need of it.
Is there anyone down there that supplies amsteel or dyneema cordage? I'm kind of curious to start playing around with some splicing, but I don't want to take anything with me that I don't have to...
Me to. Ordered it last Thursday. Will post a review as soon as I can after I get it.
We don;t get anywhere near the cold weather temps of Nth America and Europe, so I expect the 900 fill Summer to get me down to 1-2*C. I don't often do overnighters in July-August anyway.
Cheers,
Russ
Hi Rhandhali,
Short answer;
Yes, you can.
Long answer;
I haven't actually seen it in any camping\hiking stores here in Sydney, but to be honest I haven't really been looking.
I did a quick google and most yachting shops will sell it and you'll find there's heaps of them in Bris-Vegas when you move. Also look at kite-surfing places.
I've noticed 4x4 aftermarket places also stock varying sizes, so also worth a look.
Probably also worth looking at some camping\hiking stores near you. Find one with a good range and nice staff and go in there often. You'll find that once you build that relationship and mention your looking for something specific, they'll either be able to get it for you, or will know someone who can.
You'll also find that it can often be cheaper to get stuff from overseas. The Aussie dollar is very strong right now and looks it will remain so for quite some time.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Russ
hiya all. since this seems to be sort of an Aussie themes thread i was hoping for some ideas from you all.
I have been looking at buying a hammock for Australian conditions for a while and have narrowed the preferences down to either a HH or Clark brand hammmock.
If any Aussie out there has either can you please post some feedback.
Frankie
Hi Frankie,
I have a Hennessy Explorer Asym which I bought 2nd hand last year. It was my first experience with a hiking hammock and I was impressed from the first hang in my backyard. It's a very comfortable hammock when used with a UQ, but not so comfortable when used with a pad. If you go with the HH, get the side entry option as the bottom entry can become a bit of a pain.
The only thing I don't like about the HH is the rope suspension can be a bit fiddly to get setup correctly, and the stock tarp is to small.
As it happens I decided to take advantage of the current strong Aussie dollar and buy a whole new setup where each piece will complement each other.
So last week I ordered a Warbonnet Blackbird 1.1oz Double layer, Crowsnest Summer UQ with 900-fill down and a Terra Rosa Gear Adventuring Tarp (made in Aust by a HF member, HitchHiking).
I went with the WBBB for the following reasons;
-Webbing suspension,
-Side entry, (although HH now offers this)
-weight is a bit lower,
-price is lower,
-everyone on these forums raves about them.
My advice would be;
-include the Warbonnet Blackbird as an option when doing your research,
-Consider the peripherals your going to need, or may want to upgrade (Tarp, UQ, Suspension) then consider the cost of those for each Hammock, and if a custom product is available (eg, ArrowHead Equipment Potomac UQ is designed for the HH)
Hope the above helps. Feel free to PM me if you want to anything further.
Cheers,
Russ
thanks for the comeback....
since ive stared looking ive been struck on the Hennnessy hammock...probable because its the first "all in" system ive been exposed to.
Since being on here {long time lurker} ive been exposed to many different options.
But as someone not worried about cost: indeed, willing to buy a few different brands, im sorta leaning towards clark as a whole-in-one package.
That being said, most of my trips will be kayak trips BUT......as said, am willing to buy more than one brand if performance is different for a hiking trip.
Either way, any feedback is welcome, whether biased or factual....especially from any Aussie hangers....
Frankie.
For Qld conditions? Anything with a bug net!
