I took a big needle with big eye and snipped off sharp point and then sanded it a bit to get rid of rough edges. Wasn't in the mood to make a special run to WalMart. Worked well enough for the 4 slings I made.

Another tool is a loop turner (Dritz #647). It works like the "No-Knot" splicing tools used for hollow braid fishing or kite lines, but it's 10" long, and the right diameter for splicing 7/64 amsteel. Cost is under $4.
