I took a big needle with big eye and snipped off sharp point and then sanded it a bit to get rid of rough edges. Wasn't in the mood to make a special run to WalMart. Worked well enough for the 4 slings I made.

a 4mm fid is going to be to big.

I have a 2.75mm knitting needle I used to use and its almost to big.

You can get one of the Toss splicing wands in "micro" If you want to pay between $55 and $80.

Or you can double over some 18-22 gauge wire and use that. Its simple and cheap.

I use the double wire method for 1.75(lash-it) to 1/8. Simple and cheap is right. Makes it a quick and easy job.

Getting the tape off can be a bother but otherwise it's very easy.

If you're doing a fixed eye with a tapered bury, I think it's easier to pull the end out of the bury far enough so you can do the taper AFTER doing the bury.

Yep.. I found that to be the case as well. I still do it this way, I do my tapers after I bury the line.

Another tool is a loop turner (Dritz #647). It works like the "No-Knot" splicing tools used for hollow braid fishing or kite lines, but it's 10" long, and the right diameter for splicing 7/64 amsteel. Cost is under $4.
