    Under Quilt Width

    Hello everyone,

I am in the process of making a under quilt from a Snugpak Jungle Blanket. I intend to follow the video from sargevining's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obBGIGo0nHY. However I am curious as to how wide I need to make the UQ. Watching the video sargevining left the blanket at it original length of 65". On most websites selling UQ I see that the standard is somewhere around 48". How wide should I make my UQ? If narrower than 65" is more appropoate I can always fold the sides of the blanket to the desired width and use them as the side channels. Let me know what you think

    Thanks

40-48" is what I've seen for most underquilts.

Comfortably reaching from shoulder to shoulder is what you want. If possible, lay in a hammock and get someone to do a quick measurement.

Sometimes folks like a little more coverage for winter camping.

Too much width is problematic, gaps can form easily, especially at the foot end.

I'm a big guy with wide shoulders, so for my winter/car camping UQ I got a custom New River from AHE. It is 52in wide. I can imagine needing anything wider than that... Ever. I also have a standard HG incubator that works well for backpacking.

Wider is not always better, and as Ratdog pointed out too wide can easily cause gaps from the waist down. I'm a tall, broad shouldered guy who prefers side sleeping and have found that 45" is just about perfect. Any wider than that and I think I'd need to add some shockcord over my ridgeline to ensure the sides were pulled up enough, esp. around my hamstring area.
It is a very alert, active sheep, with a stylish, lively carriage.

I use a Juki & Pfaffs w/ assorted attachments, and have serviced lots of vintage machines. Any questions?

I have really broad shoulders (fill up an avg sized doorway with a bit left over) and my diy down underquilt at 55 inches long by 45 inches wide is fine for me. Since you're on a angle it gives plenty of space.

Yup! Bigger guy - 225 lbs and 5 ft 10 inches. 3 season Yeti (40" wide by 46" long - 13 oz.) fits me perfectly. Made an Apex 5 UQ with the same dimensions for warm weather (40° and up), weighs 13 1/2 oz with suspension.
