    Sipsey BBQ on the hoof

Finished a 10 mile hike (approx 5 in and 5 out) last week on trail 209. I was hiking pretty fast for me and was coming around a big rock nd suddenly realized i needed to move over since a heard a hiker coming, As i looked at the big rock i could see the tail of a black lab. Ur was about 10 yards away. I heard a nouse and looked off the trail about 7 yards was a big sow hog. The black tail i was looking at was also a hog. Long story short 5 adult hogs and 3 piglets. They spooked once but never went far. Meant to hang my hammock but due to it being a woek day i ran oyt of time, i have pictures i will post if i can figure it out. Very fun trip.

My wife and I went down trail 206 along Thompson creek about 3 weeks ago and all along the trail the ground was rooted up about 10 to 15 feet on both sides of the trail. It takes a lot of hogs to root this much area. We didn't see any hogs but they had been there. On a side note, this trail was overgrown to the point of almost being unusable.

It is very dry right now and any low lying area will have lots of hog sign. I have seen lots of rooted areas but that was my first encounter. Very close. I was a little worried the piglet would wander too close to me. The sow was keeping a close eye on the piglets.

I saw hogs during my April trip to Sipsey, mostly on 209 and 204A near the Big Tree. I got some video of them, big, little and in between. (Shameless plug for my Sipsey April video on YouTube). The phrase "hog heaven" comes to mind regarding Sipsey Wilderness Area. I don't think they're hunted in there, so all they have to do is avoid humans and live large.

It needs to be opened for "killin'" not hunting. These things are going to destroy our beautiful treasure. Thin them out! Sooner, rather than later.

+1 The hog population seems to be out of control and they're ruining the place.
