Didn't say it competed with anything, but it is sold commercially. No one suggested it competed with Deet in efficacy, simply that it was an alternative bug repellent.

You can choose to minimize the hit count and then make a ridiculous statement to use the reduction to the absurd argument technique all while never having tried it and making factually inaccurate statements.

I for one, am giving it a try.

I have a friend who used the really strong DEET. He didn't like to spray it on his face (it stings like pepper spray) so he sprayed it into his hands and then applied to his face. He didn't think anything about it. Later he showed me the temple area on his sunglasses, where he had taken them on and off. There was a thumbprint sized dent in the frame from his Deet covered thumb. I think sunglass frames are some type of nylon, and I assume the same type of reaction may affect a hammock. I would hate to douse myself with something and then have it eat through my hammock while I am in it. I doubt that would actually happen that drastically, but since there are alternatives, I feel better with something else.

Hank Scorpio: Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks!

I just got two million Google hits on eating cat boogers, including this beautiful YouTube video.

The point was that there is info out there.

    My pic is better.

I also use peppermint oil and water to spray for ticks and fleas when and if they hit the house. Does the job, just don't want to hike smelling like a candy cane.

I spray down my hammock every spring with Permethrin and have not had any issues with the bugs. Hang it where there are NO cats and get the fabric good and wet, let it dry before packing up and you should be good to go for the summer.

Last year I was looking for another option and Insect Shield in Greensboro NC will treat your hammock for about $15 or $20 plus some shipping .

Something to keep in mind is that most of the permethrin concentrates have petroleum distillates in them which I believe have the potential to mess up cloths and gear.

My personal go to is Bonide Bed Bug Killer. Last time I got it I think it was about $8 for 32oz.

Someone asked about degradation from light. Here's your answer. Martins puts out a 10 solution that doesn't have petroleum distillates. This is the one to use. It has very little odor.

Yup, because Permethrin will kill cats and fish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permethrin
