Homer: Sir, I need to know where I can get some business hammocks.
Hank Scorpio: Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks!
I gave up DEET after melting the steering wheel on my wife's van after a particularly buggy hike. I had shorts on and had hit my legs pretty well. Next thing i knew they had brushed up against the steering wheel and the side of the door. Left damage in both locations. I've had fantastic results using a combination of permethrin and picaridin. I bought my concentrated permethrin at tractor supply and use it to treat gear and my garage. I use the sawyer stuff on my clothing just in case I did screw up my dilution.
And the EPA's fact sheet of Permethrin in general:

As a test, why not try mixing a solution of the 36% stuff and trying it out on an old shirt or on your shoes. One of the issues with this stuff is the smell, but since only 64% of it is contains petroleum distillates (versus 90% with the other solution) and to get the concentration down to 0.5% you'd have to cut it by 72:1, add 1 oz. to 2 quarts + 1 cup of water. That's a lot of water. I wonder how much that could possibly smell after diluting it that much.

When I suggested catnip, I should've specified using it only on your skin. The spritzer application seems to be slightly sticky, so I usually just grab some fresh leaves and grind them up, pinch out the juice and rub it on. I am a firm fanatic on permethrin on clothing and gear. It is so gratifying to lay in the hammock watching skeeters crawling around on the bug net, looking for a way in then rolling off, dead. Or a tick crawling up my leg, only to drop off. Liquid permethrin on the skin tends to induce a migrane size headache. Loved the pix of the cat in the backpack.
I have been using a Martins brand of permethrin that is petroleum based and it does leave an odor, not a bad smell, and it goes away after a few days.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
my wife is really adverse to any kind of chemicals and prefers to use Skin-So-Soft. It used to be one of those fortunate life-hack finds that Avon beauty lotion actually repelled bugs but I think it has been branded into a repellent now.
does anyone else use it, or other products like Deep Woods Off? are they just not as effective as what we're discussing here?..
