    Old Down still good?

We have our sleeping bags hanging up in the basement. It dawned on me that we have a old Frostline down sleeping bag that my wife made in school in the early 80's that never gets used now. Wife is ok if I want to use the down to make a UQ... My question is, any reason the down would have degraded to the point where its no good? The nylon cover of the bag is really showing its age- kinda crinkly. When patting the down, it seems normal. Any thoughts?

Someone else asked recently, you can wash it I recall and return some fluff and removing any body oils.

Give it a go..if it doesnt work your only out an old decrepid bag. and you can add some fresh down when your building the new quilt, doctor it up a little. Everything breaks down over time..everything. But my opinion is..it will work. Probably not as good as new, but it will work.

might not be the latest and greatest; but go for it- just make a small allowance for the lesser fill power- I seem to recall that 550-600 was top of the line about then-
(I also have a frostline project in my closet- early gore-tex rain parka..my first major sewing effort- )

I bought several Frostline kits on ebay just to get the down a couple of years ago, and used it in some insulated hammocks. They have served very well, though I agree the down probably can't compare with the 800 fp & higher that's available now. Still, it hasn't collapsed on me.
