Let me clarify, I use it as a winscreen around a micro-rocket stove for the last couple of years. Not a fire pit. Never had any issues, no melting, discoloration, etc. They also use it to make cozies for pots and most leave them on while cooking. (further edit, not on the bottom of said pot, just the sides.)

They seem to have a 2-month ship date right now, but those who don't care about weight seem to like them.
It's been two months waiting on my Amazon order and not a shipping date in sight.

I'll offer up this for perusal. Pads will do you fine. But once you go UQ...you'll never go back to a pad.
    Carry forth.

I haves seen reflectic used as cozies but I have never seen anyone cook with it on their pot. Set mine on the stove before by mistake and it melted.

I cannot help with the bag liner question, but I can advise on an inexpensive UQ.

I made a partial UQ from 2 layers of batting ($5/yrd Walmart) and Polyester material ($1.50/yrd Walmart). It has a metallic infused backing(Mylar I believe). The UQ cost me less than $20 total with grosgrain and shockcord. It has taken me down to 23*F and starting to get cold at this point. The TQ was also Walmart material and Polyester stuffing(About $10 total for TQ).

I have since made another longer UQ about $20 total, but that first UQ is still in use for 4+ years now. Since you're using it as a car camping item and weight and pack space is not a concern, you can save a ton of money if you have a sewing machine.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

$ave, $ave, $ave and just buy what you need.... ONCE. It would be worth taking a heavy blanket or two from home for the limited time you will need it. Get the right gear and happiness will be yours!

A tough lesson I've learned over the years. I still have the occasional slipup where I try to go cheap or don't do the research, resulting in wasted money, time and space on the shelf.

Haha yeah, I would love to go the underquilt route as my first option, but we'll have to wait and see. The main reason I cant't save is the trip will be near 7 - 10 days of camping easily which could have some rather diverse weather conditions if we're unlucky.

Thanks Shug for the video, I've seen that video of yours before and some others as well, very informative. I only ended up asking this question due to the fact he pointed me towards the liner instead of the actual pads and the like. Though I may take a look at some of the DIY stuff, I've just never been 100% awesome at sewing due to the fact that our sewing machine is a little... touchy. Maybe I can ring up my moms and borrow her's, she just got a new one that hasn't been broken in yet.

Thanks for all the suggestion guys, I'll keep my eyes on that Snugpak UQ as well and see if I've got the time to wait for them to send it.

I used a roll of 16"X25' RFLC INSULATION ST16025, "Reflectix" $69, made two pads and two cheapo Golds Gym mats from Walmart, one for me and one for my daughter when I first started. I combined them with a couple 15* sleeping bags and they worked down to 36* for sure, maybe lower with no problems. They were actual too warm.

Have you looked into renting UQs? If this is a one time trip, it may be worth it. Plus, you can try before you buy.

I gave up on work-arounds, and have convinced my wife to allow funds to be "tithed" to a hammock fund, since hammocking has become my new religion.
