    Fray in Webbing

    Hi ya'll, first post here.

I've modified my HH Explorer Asym Deluxe suspension with 15ft webbing straps and Dutch's cinch buckles with amsteel loops. I've only hung one night in this hammock and I just noticed a slight fray in the edge of one of the webbing straps. Should I replace the strap or is the webbing plenty strong enough? The fray is quite minimal, but I don't want to wake up on the ground or worse yet be stranded on the ground on a backpacking trip.

Define "fray". Is it a few fibers that got snagged on something, but are otherwise intact? Or is the webbing cut/damaged?

If the webbing has actually been damaged after only one hang, you need to determine how it happened (if possible) and work to prevent it in the future. The cinch buckle/amsteel loop combination has been known to work its way off center and cut into the webbing. A quick search should turn up plenty of other posts on that topic.

As far as reusing the webbing in the future, it depends on the extent of the damage and how risk-averse you are. All suspension will begin to wear over time and show signs of damage. When the suspension looks like it shouldn't be trusted, it probably shouldn't be.
