My next AT section hike will be the last week in April, starting in Deep Gap, NC and heading north for 7 or 8 days. This will also be my first long trip using a hammock, which I will be purchasing sometime in the next month or so. I'm fairly certain that I've decided on a double layer WBBB with a Speer Winter Tarp. I know that it may still be quite cold at night in late April, so I will also need to buy an underquilt (right?). If I use an underquilt, will I also need a CCF pad? Also, my current sleeping bag is a 35* NF Cats Meow, and I'm guessing that I should get something warmer (my previous hikes were in a tent in early fall). What degree bag should I take for hammock camping in late April in NC? Would down or synthetic matter in this scenario? I can see already that this newfound interest in hammocks is going to cost me a freakin' butt load of money

It's likely to, but doesn't have to. You could get by with a Warbonnet traveller and accompanying mosquito net, a cheaper tarp, and a ccf pad for $5.00 at Walmart. But you won't be nearly as happy as you would with the setup you mentioned. A big tarp is awfully nice in really fowl weather when you have to do your cooking and whatnot under it.

Re: ccf pad and/or underquilt. At that time of year, where you're talking, it's either/or not both/and.

A CCF pad is a cheap way to get into hammocking and make sure it's for you. Then you move up to the UQ for glorious comfort. The upshot is that some people are perfectly happy with the CCF and save themselves a big wad of $.

Consider getting a Speer SPE. If you're not familiar with them it's an easy, cheap, and very light weight way to be able to extend the width of the CCF pad up the side of the hammock so your arms and shoulders have insulation.

I made one from scrap ripstop laying around and a CCF from wally world. Using the CCF pad, the SPE, and a down top quilt, I've done 30 degrees while wearing light clothing.
