Is Permethrin dangerous?

I just read a post here, on HammockForums.net. In the post the member stated that he was thinking of applying permethrin to the bottom and bug net portion of his hammock. I was curious so I googled permethrin.

I have only skimmed it, so I may have missed something, but from the little bits I read it does NOT sound like a nice thing to have right next to ones face.
I am not trying to start a controversy here. I am just curious what others have to say.

That was my post. From what I understand if you get it on you when wet it's dangerous. Once it dries, it's fine. Besides, it wouldn't be close to my face anyway.

The oxygen you're breathing in dangerous. I'm not talk wako green global warming air pollution either. Oxidation is killing you as wee speak.

There is a lot of talk on Whiteblaze.net about using that. I think if I was going though thick tick areas I would apply it to my gaiters and shoes.

I have really not read up on the stuff enough yet to use it. But as funbun said the consenses is that it is fine after it dries.

As a replacement for permethrin, has anybody tried "Bug Off". It is "all natural", composed of herbs, lemon juice and something else, cannot remember all that is in it?

I have a DDT-phobia of anything that is so toxic that insects die from touching it -- no matter how safe the gov'ment says it is. I'm currently using Repel lemon eucalyptus oil based repellent. I've also noticed that the local mosquitoes really dislike garlic. Eating a garlic snack before bed seems to make it safe enough to sleep outside.

The boy scouts advocate this stuff as well as the military. Obviously that doesn't mean it's safe; my scuba dive tables were made my seeing how deep US sailors could go and for how long, before they died. I think the key is the concentration. The recommended concentration for human activities is 0.5. The article referenced above was talking about Permethrin as an insecticide for crops, MUCH higher concentration.

That said, I'll be putting it on the body of my hammock, but I think I'm staying away from the area where my face is usually pressed up against.

i have only found one tick when using permithin,and this tick was dead in my boot,i sprayed my pants,my boots and my shirt,the stuff is awesome in extreme tick country. neo
