hammock stand for car camping

Heres an off the wall question for you........I would like to make a hammock stand for my family to take carcamping---so all 4 of us could hang instead of using a tent. Is such a thing possible? Any ideas? thanks!

I've gone car camping with my family and we were fortunate to have trees, which would be my first choice. I've hung hammocks side-by-side, stacked, and in a "V" shape to all hang under a single tarp.

I saw an interesting photo of Boy Scouts who made a hammock village by lashing together several tri-pods with ridge poles connecting them into a hexagon. It's more work, and you'd need a trailer to haul all the lumber.



I recently purchased a steel hammock stand. For the price, it was a better option for me than building my own (time/labor/cost) and it works great. The hammock stand was from Agri Supply for only $40. This stand breaks down easily and requires no tools to assemble or break down. For the price, you could get a few and use them together in places where trees are not an option.

You could always build a few of Risk's $25 Hammock Stands. Probably your cheapest option, although they cost more than $25 to build these days. The one I built a couple years back cost me closer to $40, if I remember right.

A better option IMO is to use threaded steel piping. Ed Speer uses them at his hangouts and I've made a few of them for use at hammock events out here. Very functional and easy to transport and assemble. The downside is the ridiculous weight and cost. Each stand has cost me well over $100 to build and carrying all the parts more than a few hundred feet is a major PITA and takes several trips. But, the effort gets you a very stable stand that will fit any camping hammock I own and can be set-up in less than 5 minutes just about anywhere. Plus, once disassembled, they fit in my SUV very easily. I've got the plans around on one of my computers somewhere. If you want them, let me know and I'll go digging for them.

I was lucky enough to acquire a prototype combination vehicle/hammock stand (well, half a hammock stand really...) earlier this year. It may not be readily apparent in the photo, but the black metal pipe thing that goes over the top of the seats is a very effective half of a hammock stand when parked near a tree, road sign, fence or another vehicle. There is scope for hanging up to four hammocks off the half-hammock stand if the combination vehicle/hammock stand is parked in a suitable area.

I wish I had known about the Agri link above before I built the DIY per Risks instructions. It ended up costing less than $42 and will fit in the car with the seats down. Probably weighs the same as the steel stands. One nice benefit over the steel stands, though, is that I have enough height to have my tarp above my hammock and don't need to use the same point for both.

Would this lashing hold up with just 2 tripods ?

Yes it would work with two tripods and a ridgepole.
