Sewing Project Problem - Is this possible?!!

This is going to be a little difficult to explain, but I have a DIY project I can't quite figure out. Any help is appreciated.

I own a GG Virga Pack. I have attached a tube like stuffsack in the middle of the pack to hold my tarp and rain gear...

The new GG Virga 2 has a sewn in channel to do the same thing. It is permanently attached and much cleaner...

What I want to do is take the original pack design, which I have...

And sew a channel like the middle picture has, into the two khaki flaps. I wanted to use a durable stretch Cordura or mesh. I know that I can hand sew this, but it would take forever and not look very clean. I've looked at these cheap handheld sewing machines and thought that MAY work, at least part of the seam. I can't visualize a way a normal sewing machine could do it personally.

Anyone think this is possible? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. I feel like there has to be a way to do it to look clean and not take 4 hours. I really want to keep my old pack, and the stuffsack I have been using wear out quickly and don't look very clean. Thanks for checking this out.

It looks to me like you will need longer straps added to the back pocket area. Then on the bottom hem sew the fabric onto Polyester webbing but not tight you want the fabric kinda folded into the webbing every inch or so (so the pocket isn't to constricted on the bottom, so that it has excess fabric at intervals against the webbing. Then hem the top with an elastic of some sort. and hem and sew the sides to the pack but leave some excess material.
When the pouch isn't in use the straps should keep any excess fabric pressed against the pack.
I would even think about not sewing the sides all the way since the straps may close it up enough.

    Elastic cord #2400 http://www.questoutfitters.com/narro...s.htm#ELASTIC- STANDARD & SUSPENDER
Elastic mesh maybe? http://www.questoutfitters.com/sale%...tch.htm#LYCRA- HVY. WT. Here's a remnant

Just an idea. I recently did some work on a backpack of mine and was thinking of doing something similar on the sides of the pack.

I think this would totally work, thank you.

Now how would I sew the hemmed piece of fabric to the pack itself? I was thinking of attaching it to the khaki flaps, but I'm not sure how to get my sewing machine to do this. Should I sew the fabric for the pocket directly to the pack body (the black fabric)? That seems hard to execute on a sewing machine as well.

I'm not the best with a sewing machine, so pardon me if the answer is obvious.

Oh I didn't even think about that detail. Someone else more knowledgeable may have some input, it would be a pain but I might just hand sew it to the backpack.
