The ability to customize everything in a hammock setup from the ground up (literally and figuratively). If you don't like something in your setup, but like the rest of it, swap out the undesired part for something more suitable. No need to replace the entire system. Virtually everything is interchangeable.

I also like how assembling a hammock setup promotes creative thinking. Even if you're not fabricating your own gear, getting everything put together still has some essence of a DIY type of project.

IMO comfort is the most important feature. If I had to sleep on the ground, I simply wouldn't stay out overnight. I just can't do it, I would be MISERABLE.

Next, for a mid-day or mid-hike nap, it is SO SIMPLE to string up a hammock between two trees and snooze. And, conversely, to take it down and move on!

After that, the ability to customize/personolize your setup, the ability to get a quality product, easily DIYable, inexpensively, the "cool kid" factor, all these are points in favor of hammocking.

    1. comfort and consistency.

    2. freedom; you can hang where you want.

    3. casual time IN the hammock. you'll never equal this in a tent. this includes laying around gazing, dozing, reading, or tasking. sitting and tasking, gazing, lounging, etc.

tents do not equal any of these on a singular, point to point comparison. mix the three together and it is toxic to the tent, causing extreme withering and blight.

This is true. There is no comparison between lounging around in a hammock vs tent.

A night in my most uncomfortable hammock still beats a night on the ground. I quit sleeping on the ground about 13 years ago and don't intend to go back.

I'm not sure that I have an uncomfortable hammock but keep getting new ones looking for the ultimate hang. (That could be a title for a book.)

    Freedom

I never liked being cooped up in a tent. Doesn't matter how many widows you have you still can't see anything. And if it is raining and a little warm it's like being in a sauna. I wanted a light weight backpacking setup and a tent for this would mean having to crawl around on all fours and i'm too old for that. Seems like you can never get those wondeful outdoor breezes into a tent, thats where hammocks really shine. With a hammock you are truly outdoors even though you are comfortable. Thats it for my two cents, and I respect your views and two cents worth if you are a tent person. To each his own.

To be honest I think tents are easier. There is less of a learning curve, you can buy an OK tent for very little money, campgrounds are typically setup for people in tents more than people in hammocks.

Then again, with a hammock I can actually sleep for 8 hours and wake up not feeling achy. Sometimes you need to go away from the simplest option to get an option that works better for you, that is why I sleep in a hammock.
