I went on an extended hike recently. Over the four months I did not worry about where I was going to sleep, easy options everywhere. Hills, roots, rocks and vegetation not really an issue. Less impact as mentioned above is big for me as is comfort. At one point I had rain at some level for 19 days in a row (I think). Hammock was still clean. I tent with my wife and even one day of rain usually means packing up mud in the morning. I can pull back the tarp or put it in porch mode and sit in a comfortable seat while I prepare food etc . . . The only real points I find better in a tent is you can spread your stuff around you in a tent and it is easier to dress/undress in a tent. Takes some flexibility in a hammock but after doing it so often, it did not bother me that much. Easy to put up the tarp by itself to sit under and eat during a rain storm. I had other people join me under the tarp, never had that in a tent but then again, I never set my tent up during the day to get out of the rain while eating lunch. Both really have pluses and minuses, but for me, unless I am with my wife, hands down I take the hammock.

Before I even knew about the comfort factor, I just wanted a place to work out of the rain. After setting up my tarp, I have a nice large space to do whatever if it's raining: cook, dry gear, sit, lie down. Being stuck in a tent isn't fun. I also wanted a place to sit without having to bring a chair.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned speed. I can have my hammock and tarp up in half the time my tent-bound friends set up theirs. Plus my set up elicits none of the grunts or growls that come from middle aged bodies crawling into 30-inch-high tent openings.

I adore the the fact that the next morning after rain you only have to worry about your tarp being wet.

Being able to stand up and get dressed, even in the rain (sorry, those of you with a minimalist tarp! ) I guess some tents can do that, but they don't usually have hammocks in them, and they usually come complete with the cast of Family Circus.

I had not considered camping in the woods for years until I found out about hammocks. I retired at age 70 and have had several great camp outs over the last 5 years and expect a few more. It is about ease of set up and most of all comfort.
